All HEPA filtered equipment must be tested according to WorkSafe BC’s Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.

(WSBC OSHR section 6.19) All Hepa filters must be validated to ensure that the filters are removing a sufficient amount of contaminants.

Section 6,19 (1) of the WorkSafe BC Regulation requires the employer to assess the effectiveness of HEPA filters by DOP (dioctylphthalote) testing or similar means at least as follows:

  • Annually
  • Alter a HEPA filter is replaced in o vacuum cleaner or ventilation system
  • Before use in high risk work activity

Before use in high risk work activity: The following guidance can be used to help determine when to perform DOP (or similar) testing before use in a high risk work activity.

To ensure maximum effectiveness of the test, DOP (or similar) testing needs to be conducted once the unit has been installed on-site, immediately before use in high risk work activity (i.e., just before the negative-air unit or HEPA vacuum is used on each worksite.)

If the equipment is in a High risk area for more than 30 days at a time, it needs to be retested to ensure the highest quality of safety.

DOP (Dispersed Oil Particulate) Testing: is a dispersed aerosol used to test the integrity of HEPA Filters.

HEPA Filter: HEPA filters are composed of usually fiberglass fibers randomly arranged. To qualify as a HEPA the air filter must remove at least 99.97 of all airborne particles greater that .03 micrometers in diameter from the air that passes through it.

Contaminants: Asbestos, silica dust, mold.
